The Meeting Place in Dunoon hosted an event recently to celebrate the launch of a new book dedicated to the memory of former Trustee Chair Daniel Hopkins who passed away in May 2023 at the tragically young age of 30.
Participants and people from organisations across #Dunoon and #Cowal were in attendance to share stories and a ceremonial cutting of a cake designed to mimic the book which contains a list of positive and uplifting comments about the venue’s many users.
The venue, currently open on Tuesdays, Thursdays from 11am to 3pm, is based on Hillfoot Street in Dunoon. The group is over five years old and used to run the Trading Post on Argyll Street in the town until the fire of 2021.
Co-ordinator Ros Harkin explained: “We wanted to celebrate the life of Daniel with a book about the venue’s users and volunteers and it has proved very popular. The Meeting Place was packed for the event and we’d like to express a big thank you to all who attended.
“We’ve been based here on Hillfoot Street for almost three years after previously meeting at the Burgh Hall and High Kirk Hall. We are a safe and welcoming refuge for people struggling with mental health and other personal issues, especially relevant during the current cost of living crisis.
“There’s always tea, coffee, snacks and meals available for our visitors and there’s a shoulder to lean on should they need any help, advice or just a friendly chat.
“We also organise days out and walks as well as hosting a range of empowering courses and professional counselling aimed at helping people struggling through tough times.
“We’re a fantastic wee community and it almost feels like we’re a family,” added Ros.
